O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high-school student. The singer made it through to the top tier of contestants following the judges' praise for her vocal ability. O'Neil was praised by the jury. She was however a complete loser in the top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked by this and informed the crowd that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil's performance was so always top-quality that he never fell into the third place. Judge Werner was confident, following two more stunning performances that O'Neil was going to be the winner of this year's Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and the youngest contestant in history, following the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially made public by President Paul Martin immediately.
